State Handing Out More Business Tax Breaks

An Ohio Department of Taxation report shows since 2012 the amount of tax credits given to businesses promising to create and retain jobs has been rising. The report finds the value of the incentives rose to 65 million dollars this fiscal year. Businesses reportedly increased their payrolls by 43 thousand at the same time more tax revenue was foregone. The state and business groups say tax breaks help create jobs. Opponents say tax breaks prop up the bottom lines of politically-connected businesses that would create jobs without them. They also say tax breaks place the tax burden on poorer individuals and businesses.
