State To Move Aging Death Row Inmates From Chillicothe To Toledo

Ohio is moving its death row for the third time in a little over a decade. The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction say the change is being made to better deal with aging inmates on death row and reduce prison overcrowding. Department officials say most of the 126 death row inmates will be transferred from Chillicothe to a Toledo prison shortly. The department isn't releasing the exact dates for the move because of security concerns.  The department says the Toledo prison is newer and designed to handle inmates with physical and mobility limitations. Executions will still be carried out at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Lucasville. The union representing Ohio prison guards and other workers says the state's plan will place a hardship on staff, inmates and their families. The president of the Ohio Civil Service Employees Association says the shift affects the operations and mission of the institutions. He also criticizes a lack of communication about the move.
