State School Board President Wants Fewer Members In The Future

The head of the Ohio Board of Education is recommending smaller roles for the panel and the state superintendent, citing faults with the existing governance structure and concerns about too many groups trying to craft state education policy. Board President Tom Gunlock told a committee of the Ohio Constitutional Modernization Commission Thursday the current governance structure isn't working.  He says  groups trying to create education policyinclude the governor, legislature and the board. Gunlock recommends a smaller number of seats on the board, and wants a second panel created to handle education policy. The board currently has 11 elected seats and eight appointed by the governor. The commission took no action on Gunlock's requests yesterday.
