Hundreds of recovering drug and alcohol addicts took part in a rally earlier today at the Ohio Statehouse.

The event was to mark the 25th anniversary of Recovery Month. Traditionally, this month has been a time when substance abusers who have turned their lives around are highlighted by treatment providers. This year, a man from Dublin Ohio who goes by the name Adam H credits the people who take part in the event for playing a critical role in turning his life around from drug addicted felon to a college graduate.

Adam H: If I came up here and stood at this podium by myself and there wouldn’t be anyone out here, I wouldn’t be feeling much hope or giving much hope. If I showed up at these meetings and I sat there and drank coffee by myself, where would I be? The fact that I went to Ohio State and the previous president, Gordon Gee, gave me a diploma from Ohio State University was not just of my own doing. I put in some work but it was the people of recovery who helped me, lifted me up, told me I was okay and loved me until I was able to love myself."

Adam H says he has since been able to get a good job and buy a home of his own. Recovery month is the time of each year when those who work with substance abusers are recognized alongside with those who have kicked substance abuse habits.
