Summer Reading Programs Help Kids Retain School Lessons

morguefile

During the summer break, school kids often forget some of the lessons they learned in class. Janet Ingraham Dwyer with the State Library of Ohio says that forces them to play catch-up when classes resume in the fall.

Dwyer says Ohio libraries are offering programs to keep kids reading during the summer months. She says parents should allow a child who reluctant to read to choose books on topics of interest to that child.

Dwyer says parents can set a good example by reading themselves, or reading to a child.

Dwyer says a recent survey of one-thousand parents found one in three read with their child daily, and half said their children spend more time with TV or video games.
