Two More Sentenced For Selling Native American Artifacts And Remains

Two Jackson County men have been sentenced today for digging up and selling artifacts and human remains from a Native American burial site in 2012.

Authorities say 49-year-old Brian Skeens will serve 90 days in prison and 56-year-old Toby Lee Thacker 30 days in jail. A third man - 40-year-old David Skeens - pleaded guilty last year and spent 30 days in jail. Investigators say the trio sold the remains to 57-year-old Mark Beatty, who continues serving three years of probation. Authorities say the remains will be transferred to the federally recognized tribes who assisted with the case, and re-buried in Ohio at an undisclosed location.

A native of Chicago, naturalized citizen of Cincinnati and resident of Columbus, Alison attended Earlham College and the Ohio State University. She has equal passion for Midwest history, hockey and Slavic poetry.
