U. VA. Analysis Says Kasich Sure To Win Re-election

A University of Virginia analysis indicates Republican Governor John Kasich is a sure bet to win re-election this year, in part because of questions surrounding Democratic challenger Ed FitzGerald. Ohio Public Radio's Andy Chow reports.

The Crystal Ball—a political assessment of big races released by the University of Virginia – has marked Kasich as “safe” in his bid for reelection.

Managing editor Kyle Kondik says it was always going to be an uphill battle for Democrat Ed FitzGerald—but a set of scandals dug him an even deeper hole.

An October 2012 police report placed FitzGerald in a car with a woman who’s not his wife early one Saturday morning. Then it was discovered that he had been driving without a valid license for ten years.

Kondik says this hurt FitzGerald with big Party donors who want to fund competitive races.

Kondik: “What the recent stories do is sort of confirm this belief amongst many that he just wasn’t really a viable candidate. If they’re gonna try to win some Republican-held governor’s races this year they have many other targets where they can spend their money.”

The Crystal Ball editor goes on to say that a big win for Kasich in November could really help a prospective presidential race in 2016.
