UD Prof, Founding Member of Sha Na Na Passes Away

Dayton Daily News

Funeral arrangements are pending for a University of Dayton professor and founding member of the rock band Sha-Na-Na.  66-year-old law professor Dennis Greene died over the weekend after a brief illness. The original band line-up featured 12 performers, including Greene as a vocalist. The group began singing as part of the long standing Columbia University a cappella group "The Kingsmen," but changed their name due to the Pacific Northwest group of the same name. Sha Na Na began performing in 1969, and achieved national fame after playing at the Woodstock Festival. Their 90-second appearance helped spark a 1950s nostalgia craze that inspired similar groups in North America, as well as the Broadway musical "Grease" and the TV show "Happy Days."

Jim has been with WCBE since 1996. Before that he worked as a reporter at another Columbus radio station, and for three newspapers in Southwest Florida.
