Unemployment Rate Holds Steady

Ohio's unemployment rate for August is 5.7 percent, unchanged from July.

The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services says nonfarm payrolls fell by more than 12,000 last month from July. The number of unemployed Ohioans rose by 7,000 to 323,000. The department says the sectors with the greatest job growth in August were local government, private education and health services. Job losses are reported in the construction sector, as well as in the trade, transportation and utilities sector. Ohio employers have added only 18,000 jobs over the past year. The Labor Department says jobless rates in Ohio and 10 other states held steady last month. Unemployment increased in 24 states and fell in 15 others.
