Universities Spending More On Top Level Administrators

Dayton Daily News

Payroll costs for vice presidents, deans and lower-level administrators at Ohio's 14 public colleges and universities grew by nearly 1.4 billion dollars over the past decade. Higher education experts say that means rising tuition costs and taxpayer expenses. The largest increase was in administrative jobs, which grew by 25 percent with inflation. At Ohio State University, more than 1,100 of 31,000 employees have the word director in their title. Another 95 titles include the word president; 99 include the word dean. Officials at universities say administrative jobs have increased due to federal regulations requiring more people to monitor compliance. But at many schools, these administrators are hired for their fundraising ability, their political connections, or because powerful trustees want them on the payroll for their own reasons. The numbers were complied and analyzed by the Dayton Daily News.
