UPDATE: Newark Cop Shot During Confrontation With Suspect

11:39 a.m: Chief Sarver identifies the officer as  35-year-old   Jarred Conley and the suspect as 27-year-old Randall Hutchinson. He says both are hospitalized in Columbus. Original story below:

Newark police officials have not released the name of the officer shot and wounded yesterday by a suspect who was hit by a cruiser after an attempted arrest went awry. Police Chief Steven Sarver says the officer was shot as he and other officers tried to arrest a man wanted for operating a counterfeiting ring. Sarver says the suspect told police last month that he would die at the hands of police.

Sarver is also withholding the name of the suspect. He says the confrontation happened when the suspect was pulled over by police. He fled on foot after the shooting. Sarver says he pointed the handgun at officers who gave chase and caught up with him on Church Street. An officer then hit the suspect with his cruiser to incapacitate him.
