Columbus, OH – A new award named after the winningest coach in NFL history features a nominee from central Ohio. The Don Shula NFL Coach of the Year Award includes nominations from nearly every NFL squad and one from USA Football, the sport's national governing body. Those up for the award range from NFL coaches to youth league instructors. Tom Sappington from Upper Arlington's Hastings Middle School represents the only middle school coach on the list. Sappington has coached in the Upper Arlington district since 1984 and at Hastings since 1993. The NFL plans to announce the winner next week. In a conversation with Mike Foley, Sappington says the initial inquiry from the league caught him by surprise.
