Jim Lauderdale is a multiple Grammy® and Americana Music Association Award-winning musician and one of the most respected artists working the Americana, Bluegrass and Country music communities today.
I’m A Song is Lauderdale’s latest country endeavor, his 26th album to date, and his first double album featuring 20 tracks all on one CD. I’m A Song began in 2012, where he recorded nine of the songs with James Burton, Al Perkins, and the rest of the band. He completed the remainder of the tracks last summer with the intention of only recording a few songs and turned into eleven.
I’m A Song features an all-star cast of special guests, musicians, and co-writes. Guests include Lee Ann Womack, Patty Loveless, and Buddy Miller. Jim’s band on I’m A Song features James Burton, Al Perkins, Kenny Vaughn, Dennis Crouch, Stuart Duncan, and John Oates. Co-writes on I’m A Song include songwriting greats Elvis Costello, Robert Hunter, Bobby Bare, Gary Allan, Odie Blackmon, Matt Warren, Jimmy Ritchey, and Mark Irwin.
Due to popular demand, “King of Broken Hearts”, Jim’s most requested tune is re-recorded for the first time since his now out-of-print Planet of Love was released in 1991. “I wanted to do ‘King of Broken Hearts’ again since that album is out of print, and people keep asking for that song. That’s one that I do at just about every show as a tribute to Gram Parsons and George Jones” says Lauderdale.
Most recently, Jim’s vocals are featured on the AMA-nominated Song of the Year, “Only Lies” from Robert Ellis. His record Buddy and Jim, which he wrote and recorded with longtime friend and collaborator Buddy Miller, was nominated last year for a Grammy in the Best Americana Album category and several Americana Music Awards, a show which he has hosted since 2002.
Jim Lauderdale has always stayed true to his North Carolina roots but is influenced from the experience of his travels. He first immersed himself in the early country music scenes of both New York City and Los Angeles before breaking through in Nashville as a songwriter. He has helped pave the way of the current Americana Movement recording records and writing songs that cross genres from country, pop, roots, rock, folk and bluegrass.
Lauderdale, a master songwriter, has had his work recorded by artists such as Patty Loveless, George Jones, Shelby Lynne, Solomon Burke, The Dixie Chicks, Blake Shelton, and George Strait, who has had numerous hits with Jim’s songs. Lauderdale’s music has been featured regularly on the ABC hit show Nashville, and he appeared in the successful film Country Strong.
Jim is often called upon as a player and has toured with the likes of Lucinda Williams, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Rhonda Vincent, Hot Tuna & Charlie Musselwhite and Elvis Costello. He also co-hosts a weekly radio show on SiriusXM with Buddy Miller called “The Buddy & Jim Show,” which NPR’s Fresh Air described as “…highly entertaining...” Lauderdale is also the host of the popular Music City Roots each week in Nashville and Scenic City Roots monthly in Chattanooga, TN.
He has collaborated with legends like Ralph Stanley, Elvis Costello and Robert Hunter and is also a critically acclaimed solo artist with dozens of studio releases, including his latest effort, and arguably his finest, I'm A Song.

His musical influences, who include the legendary Dr. Ralph Stanley and George Jones, can be heard in his songs with his unique sense of melody and lyrical expertise. He won his first Grammy Award in 2002 with Dr. Ralph Stanley for Lost in the Lonesome Pines (Dualtone) and then for The Bluegrass Diaries (Yep Roc) in 2007.
