The Dick & Jane Project

Fridays, 11:55am during Ante Meridiem

The Dick & Jane Project is a non-profit organization based in Columbus, Ohio. We host workshops where middle school students are partnered with professional musicians to create radio ready songs.

The students write the lyrics, the musicians compose and record the music, and together they collaborate with student designers and journalists on the production of a professionally recorded song. To date, the Dick & Jane Project has worked with over 250 students throughout Columbus, and has professionally produced 32 songs, all of which have been played on the radio. Tune in every Friday at 11:55am during Ante Meridiem to hear a new song from the Dick & Jane Project!

Dick and Jane Song of the Week: "Don't Tell Me"

Oct 14, 2013

LYRICS

Just so you know, I cry myself to sleep from night to night. I fear the sunrise because I don’t want to face the world. I’m not what you think I am. I’m about to break. Now I let the night take me away.

No, don’t tell me that you just don’t care because you know that it will break me. Don’t tell me that you feel my pain when you never shed a tear. No, you don’t know what’s good for me. You’re not the thing I need. You’re never there for me.

Take me away. Now I’ll let the night take me away.

Dick and Jane Song of the Week: "Soar Like a Bird"

Oct 13, 2013

LYRICS

I spread my wings to fly, but all they do is die. My brother already soars, yet I’m behind closed doors.I look up into the sky. Everything seems so high.

But if you don’t quit. It’s your goal you’ll get. But if you don’t quit

Just like a baby bird who’s falling, your life it might be stalling. The bird will soon succeed. Just follow its lead. But if you don’t quit.

Dick and Jane Song of the Week: "Meant To Be"

Oct 7, 2013

LYRICS

I’ve been hurt before. There are scars on my heart. I put all my faith in you, praying you wouldn’t tear me apart. You seemed different in every way. You never ever ran from me. You never played those stupid games. It was easy to fall for you.

I think you knew why I looked at you that way. I tried to hide and make it go away. I tried to stop and put on the brakes. But my heart wasn’t listening. You stopped my heart and I couldn’t breathe. And I was left wondering. Do you feel it too? Or is it just me? Or maybe you and I are meant to be.

LYRICS

I saw you running around with her this summer, her honey blonde hair billowing around her face. I should have known you were a playa, boy. You’re laughing and hugging and I want to cry.

What about the sweet memories of you and I? I guess none of that matters now. You made your choice.

Dick and Jane Song of the Week: "You are Who You are"

Mar 22, 2013

 LYRICS

Lost inside the fog and doubt in a world I don’t know, I’m scared that if I try and fail, there’s only me to blame, searching for the real me. Who am I? I am alone. I find strengths within my fears and courage in my pain. When you’re lost, you have to look for the light. When you believe in yourself, you’ll be alright. Times can be tough, but so can you. This is your chance, just keep pushing through. Yeah, you are who you are. The fog is clearing in my mind and I’ll make it if I try. I’m scared that if I never try, there’s only me to blame, searching for the real me. And I wonder who I’ll find. I find the light within myself, and I’ll never be the same. When you’re lost, you have to look for the light. When you believe in yourself, you’ll be alright. Times can be tough, but so can you. This is your chance, just keep pushing through. Yeah, you are who you are. Here I am. I’ve found myself in a place I’ve always known. I made it here because I’ve tried and look at all I’ve gained. Searching for the real me and, oh, look how I’ve grown. ‘Cause I am who I am and I found I can’t be changed.

Dick and Jane Song of the Week: " We are Strong"

Mar 15, 2013

LYRICS

You tried to take me down. You took out my legs. You made me fall to the ground. You took the light away. But you didn’t know that I’d stand back up. And you didn’t know that I’d be stronger. You thought that you could bring us down. You thought that you could break us. But little did you know that we’d grow stronger. Little did you know that we are strong. I tried to see the light. I tested out my legs. Above me was the moon shining in the dark, but I didn’t know how to stand back up and I didn’t know how to be stronger. You thought that you could bring us down. You thought that you could break us. But little did you know that we’d grow stronger. Little did you know that we are strong. Now I am standing up and I can see the light. You back away because I am growing as one. Now we are standing up and we can see the light. You back away because we are growing as one. We are growing as one.

LYRICS

If I am a hand, then you are a ring that shines in the light. If I am a hand, then you are a glove that keeps me warm in winter.

If I am a seed, then you are the dirt that keeps me warm and safe. If I am a seed, then you are the water that pours on me and keeps me growing.

LYRICS

I have ten thousand dollars of money and a house. My mom would be so happy ’cause I got my diploma. And I’ ve got guards to guard my house.

My house is red and blue with a big gate. I was working on writing and science and social studies. I was learning about the North Pole. And I’ve got guards to guard my house.

We’re going to be chilling in my new house. We’re going to be playing in my blue house. We’re going to be singing in my cool house. We’re going to be praying in my new house.

If you come over my house, you have to cook something like macaroni or sweet potato.

LYRICS

I was sitting in the window, trying to find the me lost inside, so sad I wanted to cry, felt a drop on the side of my cheek, wiped it away, came running down faster than rain. I didn’t know what to say, so I hid in my room for the rest of the day, and I cried in my pillow. Sat on my bed, trying to forget all the things that you said. They came back every time that I shut my eyes. I couldn’t fall asleep because my dreams took over the world. I should have known. I should have known that you were going to break my heart till the last piece shattered to the ground. I dream of you, our touch, our kiss, the way your lips touched mine, your hands felt on my side, the moment our hearts collide. Open your arms, if you only showed me your heartless ways. I thought you loved me. Your voice it echoes, echoMusices inside my head. I wake up with worry about every moment. My life is just a fear. I miss you. I want to be with you, but you moved on to another girl. Hoping for love, but now I found myself right here, writing this song, pouring out all my heart, hoping you’d hear it once and for all. I should have known. I should have known that you were going to break my heart till the last piece shattered to the ground. I dream of you, our touch, our kiss, the way your lips touched mine, your hands felt on my side, the moment our hearts collide. I found myself sitting in the window, stopping the tears. But I’m getting stronger, no longer so lonely. I’d know I am lovely.

Dick and Jane Song of the Week: "Reach a Little Further"

Feb 22, 2013

LYRICS

Hello? Can you hear me out there? Let me be the first one to tell you: be yourself, don’t ever fall down, speak up, shout out for what you believe in. Let everybody know who you are, and I promise you’ll go very far. Getting ready for battle and he’s trying to hold his ground. His heart is racing, numb with fear and doubt. The reign of bullets begin, as missiles streak the sky. Everything’s about to change in the blink of an eye. She feels like closing door. Oh, reach a little further and you will find, that you can walk the distance, discover bravery inside. Outrun the resistance, keep on persisting, and it will be alright. Oh, reach a little further. They watch with pity as her pain takes its toll. She takes a deep slow breath. She’s longing to feel whole. Despite uplifting words, they can’t help anymore. She’s fought for so long; she feels like closing door. Learn how to stand up. Learn how to fight. Whether you’re wrong or right, think like a bird or a butterfly, ready to take flight. Finally, you need to learn. Stand up, be strong, be heard, ready to fight, ready to lead. High and tall, you’ve got to exceed. Break the barriers. Jump the hurdles. Run the distance. Take off when you hear that startin’ gun. Don’t wait for resistance. Be brave and don’t let nobody ever push your fire. Speak what’s on your mind, then learn how to take steps higher. Everyday, relentlessly, they try to break him down. (Don’t let ‘em get ya.) Their laughter echoes as they push him down. He’s trying to speak up, to break through the walls. No matter how hard he tries, no one can hear his calls. (Come on, come on.)

Dick and Jane Song of the Week: "Silent Conversation"

Feb 8, 2013

LYRICS

I was deep in my thoughts, thoughts, thoughts. When you looked at me, my eyes were red. Something about me, you caught, caught, caught. I was running away from it. When we first met, met, met, you helped me stand on my two feet. You became my escape, escape, escape. You held out a hand and reached into my soul. And I realized the tears I cry when you cross my mind, and I know you’ll always be with me. Even when I’m gone, time is passing by. And I need you, said I need you, by my side. Because of you, my eyes are open. I see the world so clearly. You dragged me into this silent conversation. My fears should become as real as you. You held out a hand and reached into my soul. And I realized the tears I cry when you cross my mind, and I know you’ll always be with me. Even when I’m gone, time is passing by. And I need you, said I need you, by my side. You are my thoughts. You are my words. You are my memories. You are mine. You are my thoughts. You are my words. You are my memories. You are mine. You dragged me into the silent conversation. I have to fade away into this silent conversation.

Dick and Jane Song of the Week: "Bumper Cars"

Jan 4, 2013

LYRICS

A beautiful sunny day started out like any other. Driving down the street in his rusty old clunker, “Can I make it there?” he wondered. The big promotion was his for the taking. He could finally see to the top. This is the day when he needed to get there the most. You can’t give up.Your can’t give in. If you’re meant to be on the road that you’re on, then you’re bound to win. No, you can’t give up. You can’t give in. Take your time. Slow down. See life through to the end.

Well she sits and she thinks, “I’m so glad I’m on this road, I have no idea where I’m going but I have room to be bold.” And sweeping by all of the slow ones, the busses and the tractors. All that’s left is the open road. And all she can do is go faster.

Oh, that last left turn was a time to forget. But you’ll always remember and always regret. Never before has something bad been so good. Both cars in pieces and as you stand to the side, it could have been worse. You’re still living life.

Dick and Jane Song of the Week: "Invisible"

Nov 30, 2012

LYRICS

Look over here. Look over there. Look everywhere. Do you see me sittin’ there? Do I have to stare? Let me close the door of opportunity. Do I have to be noticed in a picture? ‘Cause you don’t see me.

Am I invisible? Am I invisible? Am I invisible? Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Am I invisible?

Am I like a blinding wall? Just supposed to stand tall? Waiting for your response? Waiting for you to see me? Am I supposed to be that way? Sitting, waiting all day? Sitting, smiling at you?

LYRICS

The leaves change, melted to the ground as diamonds fall from the sky. The leaves change, melted to the ground as diamonds fall from the sky.

We all live. We all die. It’s a part of the cycle we call life.

Flowers grow and fall from the trees and passes on to another leaf. And when one dies, another grows in its place. Flowers grow and fall from the trees and passes on to another leaf. And when one dies, another grows in its place.

We all live. We all die. It’s a part of the cycle we call life.

Dick and Jane Song of the Week: "I Love Nature"

Feb 24, 2012

LYRICS

I love nature because of the beautiful colors. I love nature because nature is pink. I like the colors because of the green in the trees. The colors are lovely just the way they are.

I love nature because of the beautiful sounds. I love nature because the sounds are so funny. I just think to myself, ”they’re magnificent.” The birds chirp and sing ’cause that’s the way they are.

I feel the grass when I go hiking. I feel the bugs when they bite me. And the flowers they are colorful. And the berries are juicy just the way they are. The colors are lovely just the way they are. The birds chirp and sing ’cause they way they are. The berries are juicy just they way they are.
