The Global Village

Ray Manzarek, the keyboardist and a founding member of The Doors, died Monday in Germany. He was 74.

A statement from publicist Heidi Ellen Robinson-Fitzgerald said Manzarek died in Rosenheim, Germany, after a long battle with bile duct cancer.

Manzarek and Jim Morrison founded the iconic band after meeting in California. The Doors went on to become one of the most successful rock 'n' roll acts of the 1960s — and continues to have an impact decades after Morrison's death in 1971.

The Athens, GA. based band Futurebirds will bring their psychedelic country sounds to the WCBE studios the day after their show at The Basement.

Bluegrass legend Peter Rowan will play a few songs during The Global Village ahead of his show that night at Woodland's Tavern! 

The L.A. based quintet The Lonely Wild will play a few songs for us during the Global Village! 

This week, All Songs Considered goes big with massive, heart-thumping new music from the gloriously exuberant, sprawling pop group The Polyphonic Spree, and the brilliantly experimental folk-rock band Akron Family. We also check out a gritty album from a Swedish group known as Goat, whose music is part prog-rock, part Afro-pop and undeniably awesome.

It's kind of surprising that Iron and Wine's Sam Beam has ended up making his living in music. Early on, he received a cautionary lesson from his dad.

"My father used to book Motown bands in college," Beam says. "And he imparted some wisdom on me that it's an easy gig to lose your shirt in."

Beam grew up in South Carolina; he studied art in college, then got into making movies. Music was just something he did on the side, for fun.

Out of Bloomington, IN., Murder By Death will drop by WCBE to play a few songs during the Global Village!

Langhorne Slim & The Law are touring  in support of their latest CD The Way We Move and they'll be making a stop at WCBE before their show that night at The Bluestone with Lucero! 

Folk and pop singer-songwriter Seth Glier will join us "Live From The Library" during the Global Village.  He's out on the road in support of his latest release Things I Should Let You Know.  He'll perform that night with Liz Longley at Columbus Performing Arts Center for a Six String event.  Tune in for live music and conversation on WCBE!  Listen here!

On this Piano Jazz from 2008, bassist and singer Esperanza Spalding brings her neo-soul style to a set of standards with the aid of pianist Leo Genovese. Spalding is one of the most talked about artists in jazz today.

The Brooklyn trio The Lone Bellow is out on the road in support of their debut self titled release and will make a stop by WCBE ahead of the show at The Basement! 

The Seattle folk-pop band Ivan & Alyosha are touring in support of their debut release All The Times We Had on Dualtone Records.

English folk musician Nick Drake died decades before the song "Pink Moon" found him a wide audience, thanks to a series of Volkswagen ads back in 1999. They sparked a resurgence of interest in Drake's work — music largely ignored in his day but now inspiring legions of young musicians.
