Happy Feet

Happy Feet

Happy Film

Tap-dancing penguins could never have been pitched if the mega-hit doc Marching Penguins (2005) had not caught the imagination of every breathing human. Only this time around Happy Feet is not a doc but a high-class animation (from the director of the very humane Babe) and much more anthropomorphic than Marching Penguins.

For Your Consideration

Not bad, considering . . .

Most of the time tired . . . .

"Satire is a sort of glass, wherein beholders do generally discover everybody's face but their own; which is the chief reason for that kind of reception it meets in the world, and that so very few are offended with it." Jonathan Swift

Stranger than Fiction

Never reaches its potential.

"Our new Constitution is now established, and has an appearance that promises permanency; but in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes." Benjamin Franklin

Babel

Through a glass darkly . . .

"Crash" with global soul

"It were as wise to cast a violet into a crucible that you might discover the formal principle of its colour and odour, as seek to transfuse from one language into another the creations of a poet. The plant must spring again from its seed, or it will bear no flower, and this is the burthen of the curse of Babel." Percy Bysshe Shelley

A Good Year

A pleasant diversion

"The prototypes of strong sensation: blazing lights, red earth, blue sea, mauve twilight, the flake of gold buried in the black depths of the cypress; archaic tastes of wine and olive, ancient smells of dust, goat dung and thyme, immemorial sounds of cicada and rustic flute." Robert Hughes on Provence

Running with Scissors

Not your father's mother and son . . .

In the spirit but not the success of The Royal Tenenbaums

"The 'family' has clearly emerged anew in the late 1970s as a central subject for discussion, debate, research and writing in both scholarly and popular arenas. Anxiety over whether or not the family as a basic social institution is dying has diminished. In its stead has emerged a fairly broad consensus around the position that the family is "here to stay," but that it certainly is changing." Sheila B. Kamerman

Marie Antoinette

Those costumes are memorable . . .

Coppola can do better.

"Ennui"?For a French-based film by a most promising writer/director, I can think of only the word for BORING. How is it possible to spend millions of dollars on one of the most sumptuous-looking films in years and yet create a story so devoid of character and drama as to make Dangerous Liaisons seem an energetic masterpiece?

"Pride, pomp and circumstance of glorious war!" Shakespeare's Othello

On February 19, 1945 30,000 American troops fought 20,000 entrenched Japanese on a tufa island called Iwo Jima. After the US lost 2000 troops the first day but went on to take the island, one photo image may have inspired the nation to support the WWII effort to its victorious end.
