Marie Antoinette

Those costumes are memorable . . .

Coppola can do better.

"Ennui"?For a French-based film by a most promising writer/director, I can think of only the word for BORING. How is it possible to spend millions of dollars on one of the most sumptuous-looking films in years and yet create a story so devoid of character and drama as to make Dangerous Liaisons seem an energetic masterpiece?

"Pride, pomp and circumstance of glorious war!" Shakespeare's Othello

On February 19, 1945 30,000 American troops fought 20,000 entrenched Japanese on a tufa island called Iwo Jima. After the US lost 2000 troops the first day but went on to take the island, one photo image may have inspired the nation to support the WWII effort to its victorious end.

Jesus Camp

A true believer

Not the "camp" humor I thought it would be.

"There is no question but that if Jesus Christ, or a great prophet from another religion, were to come back today, he would find it virtually impossible to convince anyone of his credentials ... despite the fact that the vast evangelical machine on American television is predicated on His imminent return among us sinners." Peter Ustinov

The Guardian

Fun to watch and informative

Swim team in high school meant a letter for my sweater and ignominious losses without someone else to throw the ball to or blame. Therefore, I can report that The Guardian renews all my anxieties about swimming as a lonely activity and water as a potentially inhospitable place to play. The film, expertly choreographed by director Andrew Davis, depicts the training and deployment of the Coast Guard's "rescue swimmers."

Gridiron Gang

Something like Invincible

The spate of "documentary" sports stories in the last couple of years has represented all levels of games from high school (Gridiron Gang, Heart of the Game, Remember the Titans, Friday Night Lights), to college (Glory Road), to professional (Invincible), to Olympics (Miracle), and even to Paralympics (Murderball). So trying to say something new about the recent Gridiron Gang is as tough as playing that hardscrabble high school football for convicts.
