The Ohio Supreme Court has ruled the sale of the Lake Erie Correctional Institution in Conneaut to Nashville-based Corrections Corporation of America in 2011 did not violate the state constitution.  

A spokesperson for the federal Bureau of Prisons says a contract with a private prison in Youngstown for low-level offenders will not be renewed.

The Dayton Daily News reports a surprise inspection conducted by state legislators and staffers in January at the privately-operated Lake Erie Correctional Institution in Conneaut found rampant criminal activity inside.

State prison officials in Ohio are visiting the lakeshore prison that became the nation's first privately owned state prison last year to see whether dozens of safety, health and security issues uncovered in a recent audit have been fixed.
